directories
If you have problems getting Yahoo to add your site, please remember that an
actual person will visit your site and make the decision. Be careful in
choosing your categories and in writing your description. If you have not been
added after a reasonable amount of time (at least 30 days or more), you can try
again.
Yahoo
: This is the big granddaddy of Web directories. Make sure you find categories
that are relevant to your particular style of music. Then just hit the "Add
Site" button and fill in the necessary info. Here are several categories you
might wish to start with.
/Entertainment/Music/Artist/By_Genre/
(Be sure to pick the style of your band.)
/Entertainment/Music/Artists/By_Genre/Religious_and_Devotional/Christian/
/Entertainment/Music/Genres/
Unfortunately, the days of free search engine submission appear to be drawing to
a close. Most of the bigger sites now charge just to list you in their
search engine. Of course if your site gets popular, they are likely to
add you anyway. I would just make sure to get listed in Google.
Google came out of nowhere a few years ago to
become the most popular search engine by far, so do your best to get listed
there. Their listing position algorithms place a lot of emphasis on how
many people link to your site, so it helps a lot to have other people linking
to you.

other web promotion resources
There are a lot of general resouces on the Web to help you promote your online
presence. These sites contain tips that are helpful for anyone with a Web
presence, whether you have a business, information, a hobby or fan site, or
whatever. The beauty of the Net is the wealth of information; you just have to
help people find the particular "gold mine" you create. Here are a group of
resources that have been invaluable to me as I continue to learn online
promotion. Where else can you get free wisdom from some of the leaders of an
industry...
VirtualPromote
- Great site with lots of tips. Be sure to get on their email newsletter. It's
a quick way to stay in touch with all kinds of valuable promotion ideas.
Search Engine Watch
- Danny Sullivan is the search engine guru of the Web. He'll help you
understand how the various search engines work, share submission tips, and
explain how to improve your ranking. Also has a newsletter.
I've missed some, but these are the ones I keep going back to and use on a
regular basis. I'm sure more will be added to the list as time goes on, but
these should keep you busy for awhile ;-) (I had to throw in one smiley)
